Elastomeric Sealant

Properties

Brushable elastomeric acrylic sealant for terraces with increased waterproofing requirements. It creates a white protective membrane, with excellent bonding to the substrate. Due to its high elasticity, it can absorb very intense contractions and expansions, without any additional reinforcement. It protects the surfaces against moisture, which attacks the concrete rebars.

ADVANTAGES
  • It offers remarkable resistance to adverse weather conditions, maintaining its properties in temperatures ranging from -30°C to +100°C.
  • It is resistant to the corrosive gases of the atmosphere, gases such as carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, chlorides, etc.
  • It contains UV filters of new generation, contributing to its long lasting resistance against the destructive effects of solar radiation
  • Surfaces on which it is applied can be walked on, without being sticky.
  • It can cover cracks of the substrate and it is not affected by the (possible) creation of new ones.
  • It presents excellent endurance, even to stagnant water
  • It reduces the temperature absorption of the terrace by approximately 10°C, due to its reflective action (≥80%), owed to its exceptional whiteness. The product is classified a ‘COOL’ material.
  • Due to its water impermeability, it minimizes the danger of moisture concentration to the substrate, and consequently the creation of mould.

Application

DUROSTICK DS-220 is easily applied on terraces, on flat roofs to be lined with roof tiles, on roof corners and edges, lead (expansion) joints, balconies and planters. It is recommended for substrates such as: concrete, terrazzo, wooden surfaces, lime-cement mortar ones, and cement boards. DS-220 operating in system with Thermoelastic Colour, on application to the body and the walls of a residence (the existence of energy frames being a conditional), helps reducing the temperature of internal spaces of the masonry up to 20%. Therefore it helps reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling of up to 30%.

1. Preparation of a new surface

Use hard brush and water to clean loose areas and mud. Remove black stains with DUROSTICK CLEANER D-95 or a chlorine - water solution at 1:1 mixing ratio. Then flush with a lot of water. The surfaces to be waterproofed must be clean and free from pouring water for at least 48 hours, to avoid surface moisture being trapped.

2. Recoating preparation

A) In case the surface has been coated in the past with tar and/or tar papers, remove them, using a wide metal spatula by simultaneously with a hob torch. Worn-out or detached elastomeric sealants are removed in the same way.

B) To spot a part where detached sealing is not directly visible to the eye, rinse with water from a 1m distance, all over the surface using a garden hose. A different sound is coming from detached areas. Mark these areas and remove them using a sharp metal blade and a pair of pliers. Application: Before applying the sealant, apply using a roller, the water based micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX, or DUROSTICK SOLVENT PRIMER, diluted at a 50% ratio with THINNER 101 of DUROSTICK. Alternatively, dilute DS-220 with water in a mixing rate of 1:1, in order to use it as a primer - these on the condition the terrace is free from loose parts - then apply with a roller. After it has been absorbed and has dried out, spot possible capillary cracks of 0.1-0.4mm width, and applying 1-2 layers of DUROSTICK DS-220, until they are tightly sealed. In case the thickness of the cracks on the surface is 0.5-1mm, cover them first place, using ACRYLIC PUTTY of DUROSTICK (available in cartridge form), using a metal spatula. Follow with locally applying the sealant in a two layer application. The waterproofing is finished by applying 2 complete layers of DUROSTICK DS-220 on the terrace surface whole. The second layer is applied crosswise and after the first one has set and can be walked on.

ATTENTION:

Avoid the application of the sealant in case there is possibility of rain for the next 24 hours.

Instructions

  1. Surface preparation
The installation surface should be clean and free from loose areas, dust, paint, grease and oil. It must be wetted before application. The absorbent substrates as well as porobeton must be necessarily primed with ACRYLIC EMULSION or D-20 by DUROSTICK in a 1:1 mixing ratio with water. Plaster boards must be primed with micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX or SOLVENT-BASED PRIMER by DUROSTICK. Brittle cement mortars on floors must be spread with sealing and stabilizing mortar HYDROSTOP FLOOR after thorough wetting with 2 parts water mixed with 1 part D-20 or ACRYLIC EMULSION by DUROSTICK.
  2. Application
  3. Surface preparation

Proper preparation will ensure a perfect result.

Concrete walls: Remove pins, polystyrene and sharp projections. Cut support planks 2-3cm deep and coat them with RUST FREE POWDER (rust inhibitor) by DUROSTICK. Then seal holes with D-55, DUROFIX or SUPER FAST by DUROSTICK. Then clean surfaces from loose areas, form release agents and salts by BIOCLEAN biodegradable industrial cleaner by DUROSTICK.

  1. Application

Pour the can with the acrylic emulsion (component B) in the existing can and slowly add cement mortar (component B) while continuously stirring. It is recommended that a power drill at low rpm - with the suitable mortar stirring attachment - is used for stirring. The mix will remain workable for approximately 2 hours. The HYDROSTOP WATER TANK must be applied on well wetted surfaces. Application is performed by emulsion brush or roller brush in 3 crossed coats, thickness 1 mm each. The new coat will be applied while the earlier one allows light foot traffic. Repeat wetting if the coat remains for increased time until drying. Application is not allowed at temperatures below 5ÆC or where rain might fall within the next 6 hours.
